Nipple Inversion Surgery
What is an Inverted Nipple?
At Carmel Cosmetic & Plastic Surgeons located just north of Indianapolis in Carmel IN, our doctors will inform you about surgical corrections for your inverted nipples. Inverted nipple repair is performed on nipples that have been inverted since birth or have become inverted due to breast-feeding or other causes. Inverted nipples may rarely cause functional problems for women, but more commonly, it can affect a woman's body image. An inverted nipple can look flat or be a slit like depression at the normal nipple location.
Nipple Inversion Procedure
Inverted nipple repair can be performed alone or in conjunction with other breast procedures such as breast augmentation, breast lift, or breast reduction surgery. The surgery can be performed under local anesthesia and generally takes about 30 minutes to one hour to complete. The surgeon makes a small incision in the nipple area and then corrects the inversion by incising the contracted tissue and utilizing stitches alone or local rearrangement of your tissue to correct the inverted nipple. After the inverted nipple has been corrected, the incision is stitched closed and gauze dressings are placed over your breast. A special surgical bra is placed over your breasts after the surgery to ensure that your breasts are held in the best position for healing.
After Your Nipple Inversion Surgery ...
Within a few weeks, the swelling will disappear and the skin will return to a normal appearance. You may experience some numbness in the area of your surgery, but this generally goes away within six weeks of your surgery. If both nipples are corrected, your breasts may heal at different rates. You may even experience asymmetrical swelling after surgery which will resolve within the first couple weeks surgery. This is normal.
