Breast Reduction Reduction Mammaplasty
Women with large breasts may experience dissatisfaction with body image. Moreover, they may experience pain and physical discomfort that impair a woman's ability to lead an active life.
What is Reduction Mammoplasty?
The medical term for the breast reduction procedure is reduction mammoplasty. The goal of a breast reduction, which can be discussed with you at our Carmel plastic surgery office located just north of Indianapolis, is to reduce the size of large, pendulous breasts that are disproportionate to a woman's body and can cause physical pain. The surgery improves size, shape and the associated conditions of large breasts that include:
- Back, neck, and shoulder pain
- Shoulder grooving from bra straps
- Restricted physical activity due to breast size
- Skin irritations beneath the breasts
This procedure, if deemed medically necessary, will be covered by health insurance. The pre-determination process may require proof of the above conditions and evidence conservative therapy has failed. Photos may be required as well.
The breast reduction procedure is commonly performed through a "keyhole" incision. The nipple, which remains tethered to its original blood and nerve supply, is then repositioned. The areola is reduced if necessary. Rarely, a free transfer of nipple/areolar complex is performed. In any case, incision lines are visible and permanent but will fade with time.
Following surgery, a support bra should be worn to decrease swelling and support the breasts as they heal. Initial healing will include swelling and discomfort at the incision sites. Discomfort can be controlled with medication. You can return to work within 2-4 weeks or 4-6 weeks if your job requires heavy lifting. A support bra is recommended for 3 months after surgery.
Your new breast size should free you from the pain and physical limitations you experienced pre-operatively and boost your self image.
