How Can Breast Augmentation Be Customized to Your Needs?
Our plastic surgeons work with breast implants that are filled with saline or silicone gel. Saline implants consist of smooth silicone shells filled with a sterile saline solution. Silicone implants also have a smooth silicone shell but are filled with supple silicone gel. Silicone implants have different levels of cohesiveness, which refers to the firmness of the silicone gel material. Many patients prefer silicone implants since they feel more like natural breast tissue. However, others prefer saline implants since saline can be safely absorbed by the body in case of leaks.
The volume of a breast implant refers to how much saline or silicone material is added to the shell, often measured in cubic centimeters (cc). By comparison, an implant profile describes how much the breast implant projects from the chest wall when standing, which is based on the base width and volume of the implant. Profiles typically range from low, which features a flatter shape, to ultra-high breast implants with a narrow base. Finding the correct volume and profile is critical to achieving your desired results.
To further customize your breast augmentation surgery, implants come in round and anatomic (teardrop) shapes. The shape that is right for you largely depends on the outcome you want to see after plastic surgery. Patients who want more round and full breasts with a pronounced cleavage should consider round implants. Anatomic or teardrop breast implants are fuller at the bottom, creating a smoother transition in the upper pole. This results in a more gentle slope that simulates the look of natural, perky breasts.
We can employ different surgical approaches when performing breast augmentation. Breast implants can be placed above or under the chest muscle. We commonly place the implants under the pectoral muscle because your breast tissue and muscle provide more coverage for the implant, which offers a more natural appearance and feel. The subglandular approach, or placing the implant under the breast tissue but above the muscle, can result in a more comfortable recovery.
There are three common incision sites that we can use for breast augmentation: around the nipple (periareolar), within the breast fold (inframammary), and under the arm (axillary or “hidden scar technique”). The available incision sites can depend on your choice of breast implants and where you feel most comfortable having some post-surgical scarring. Many patients choose the inframammary approach as it can simplify the procedure and place the scars in a spot that’s easy to hide.
Choosing the Right Implants and Other Factors of Breast Augmentation Surgery
Most of your breast augmentation options depend on the results you want, such as choosing round implants for fuller breasts. Some options work best when matched with certain body types, such as using high-profile breast implants for patients with narrow chests. Other choices are based more on personal preference and have less impact on the visual results, such as the use of saline implants versus silicone implants.

Making Your Recovery Easier After Breast Augmentation Surgery
The breast implants will continue to settle in the next several weeks as the surrounding tissue heals around them. Our doctors may provide you with a support bra to aid in recovery. Some patients may experience swelling and discomfort following the surgery, which can be managed with medication. These symptoms should start to fade after the first few days, and many patients can resume light-to-normal activities in a day or two. Most patients can return to work within 5-10 days.
Combining a Breast Lift With Breast Augmentation
While many patients in Indianapolis seek breast augmentation as a solution to drooping breasts, the procedure is designed to enhance breast size rather than their position.
