Importance of Wearing Sunscreen Daily ... Especially in Winter
Did you know that the American Academy of Dermatology recommends that EVERYONE wear sunscreen daily for the safety of their skin despite the season or perceived sun exposure?
You may be surprised to find out that the risk of skin cancer is actually increased in the winter. Here are some reasons why:
UV rays
UV rays are present even when the sun is less visible. UV rays can pass through clouds and damage skin cells, even in the winter. The ozone layer is also thinner in the winter, making UV rays more harmful.
Snow and ice
Snow and ice can reflect up to 80% of UV rays, so it's especially important to protect your skin if you're going to be outside.
Winter activities
Activities like skiing and snowboarding can expose you to higher altitudes and more UV light reflected from surfaces.
We all are aware that sunscreen minimizes the penetration of damaging, cancer causing UV rays into the skin, but did you know it can also minimize photoaging and wrinkling of the skin leading to a healthier more youthful appearance?
At Carmel Cosmetic & Plastic Surgeons we offer a variety of sunscreens from ZO Skincare and Revision Skincare to suit your every need.
Remember to wear your sunscreen daily even in the winter. For the best protection, sunscreens should be reapplied approximately every two hours when outdoors, even on cloudy days.
