Finding Comfort in Uncertain Times
Coronavirus, the election, the coming of winter......ugggh. Do not despair! Let's focus on serving up comfort and perhaps some cocoa or even some cocktails. We need that now more than ever.
When things go sideways --be it frightening world events, stress at work, the loss of a loved one, or relationship struggles, we should try to put at least some of whatever energy we can muster into finding ways to stay calm and comforted. Without such comforts, we can’t be of service to ourselves or to anyone who might need our help.
Classic comforts can help—a favorite food, an old sweatshirt, the embrace of a friend, or an inspirational text.
But some comforts are found in slightly more unexpected places. Navigating a tough time while staying on a positive life path can be difficult. However, it is possible to find comfort even in hard times. Try one or more of these next time you feel stressed.
Resting for 15 minutes. Close the curtains, kick off your shoes, and lay down on the couch for 15 minutes. Soak up the feeling of the stillness of the room, the cozy comfort of the fuzzy soft blanket tucked around you and your head resting on the pillow.
Soaking up pleasant sounds. Sitting on the deck or walking on a trail and immersing yourself in the sounds of the great outdoors. It’s meditative and nostalgic and warming.
Hugging the dog. Wrap your arms around your dog and absorb the feeling of the warmth of the embrace. Memorize the feeling and then can recall it later and feel comforted a second time.
Here's hoping that even in these uncertain times, we find comfort.
