October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It is time once again to THINK PINK! At Carmel Cosmetic and Plastic Surgeons, Dr. Grasee and Dr. Bergman not only help women look and feel their best with cosmetic surgical procedures, they help women following mastectomies for breast cancer with breast reconstruction which can be an important next step in a woman's recovery and well being.
Breast reconstruction procedures vary depending on the results you desire along with your particular situation and other physical and psychological factors. The best decisions are made when based on medical need and personal desires and expectations. Early detection of breast cancer increases survival. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are 237,000 women diagnosed with breast cancer and 41,000 deaths each year in the U.S.. An estimated 12.4% (1 in 8) U.S. women will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. The goal of breast cancer screening is to reduce deaths associated with breast cancer through early detection. Mammograms are the best way to find breast cancer early.
Mammograms are an essential prevention measure against breast cancer deaths. Today’s advances in technology have made mammograms much less uncomfortable than in the past. If you are a woman, 40 to 49 years old, it is a good time to talk to your provider if you have not alrady about your breast cancer risk and when to start and how often to get a mammogram screening.
